Nonprofit marketing often focuses on attracting new donors, but retaining current supporters is just as important. The people who have already donated, volunteered, attended an event or subscribed to your newsletter have demonstrated that they care about your mission. Your marketing should give them a reason to remain involved.
Start by separating your audience into groups such as first-time donors, recurring donors, volunteers, event attendees and inactive supporters. Each group has a different relationship with your organization and should not always receive the same message. A first-time donor needs a sincere thank-you and evidence that their contribution mattered. A recurring donor should see the continued impact of their support. Someone who has not participated recently may need a compelling story that reminds them why they became involved.
Retention does not require sending more emails or posting more frequently. It requires communicating with greater relevance. Review your contact list, identify the major audience groups and plan at least one message specifically for each group. Strong nonprofit marketing is not simply about reaching more people. It is about giving the people who already care a meaningful reason to stay connected.
